Deeper Voice of Textiles is a fibre art project based in the Hunter area of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. The project conceived and curated by Anne Kempton of Timeless Textiles, the foremost contemporary textile gallery in Australia, will be lead by British artist and basketmaker Tim Johnson in collaboration with Newcastle based artist and stone carver Graham Wilson.
Working with approximately twenty local businesses the project will engage men using their traditional - and mostly non-textile skills - to create contemporary fibre and textile artworks. Exploring the materials, techniques, traditions and history of textiles the participants will create a challenging body of work that will be exhibited in a public space in Newcastle towards the end of April 2017. Following the exhibition the works will then be exhibited permanently in the men's workspaces and a special Fibre Art Trail map will be available for the public to follow.
